Maersk announces shipping targets validated by Science Based Targets initiative

February 12, 2024

Maersk  announced that it is the first shipping company to have its climate targets validated by Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), putting it in line with the 1.5-degree pathway from the Paris Agreement.

Quotes from the Ship It Zero Coalition:

“The Ship It Zero Coalition is encouraged by Maersk’s commitment to climate change and moving towards zero-emission shipping,” said Jonathan Butler (they/them), Ship It Zero Lead, Pacific Environment. “While setting a goal of reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 is a step in the right direction, Maersk needs to focus more on its fleet of ships.”

“We congratulate Maersk on its SBTi accreditation and call on the company to  put its cargo vessels on a path to zero emissions by 2030,” said Jim Ace, Senior Campaigner at Stand.earth.”We applaud Maersk’s net-zero commitments, but the major shipper must also focus on truly getting its fleet to zero emissions.”
